There are uncountable product that available for treatment of acne. Acne treatments are divided into three categories: topical, systemic, and procedural.

Consideration before treatment of acne

1 identify your acne condition – This will ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.
Mild Acne
over-counter product such as Salicylic acid, retinoid, Benzyl peroxide will usually work.
Moderate Acne
over-counter product such as Benzyl peroxide, Retinoid , topical antibiotic treatments
Moderately severe to Severe acne
Should seek medical treatment by dermatologist .Which They may give you systematic treatment of oral anti-biotic, retinoid or Isotretinoin .

2 Who will I treat with? This depend on the condition of acne

Esthetician or skin care therapist ( person who specialize in Beautification of skin)
For people who have mild acne
They can help you choose the product that suit to your skin
They may give you advice on daily skin care
They can perform treatment that support the treatment of acne.
Remember there are not medical doctor , if you have moderate or severe acne you should seek dermatologists for treatment.

Dermatologist
Best option for any acne condition
If you have nodulocystic acne or cystic acne you should seek dermatologist
They will develop acne treatment plane for you.
Help give you support and advice

Remember " It's common to try several treatments before finding the one that works for you. Try not to get discouraged. And remember, with any acne treatment or therapy, consistency is key to a successful outcome" claims Palmer (A, 2010)

Topical Acne treatment

Non prescription acne treatment

Acetone and Alcohol
when combine Acetone help reduce oil production, alcohol act as anti-bacteria agent . When use alone acetone tend to have no affect

Benzoyl peroxide
Is one of the most common ingredient found in over-the-counter treatment product. It works by killing P.acne ( the bacteria that cause acne inflammation) and help removing dead skin cell to prevent the blockage or clogged pore.("Acne Treatment Available without a Prescription" [n.d.] ). It is one of the most effective acne treatment for mild and moderate acne and it respond well it both comedones and inflamed lesions. It also available in many form such as water base, alcohol base, cream base in concentration of two 2.5 to 10 percent. The common side effect of benzoyl peroxide is excessive dryness of the skin, skin irritation, itchy skin, flaky. It is recommend to use it form lower concentration build up tolerance and prevent unwanted side effects. (Tubb , 2010)

Salicylic acid
Is also an ingeredients found in many over-the-counter product. It regulate the shedding of dead skin cell and unclog the pore to prevent forming of new acne. There is no anti-biotic effect or sebum production. It must be use continuously. Once stop pore will clog and acne return. It is available inform of gel, lotions, creams, and pad. The most common side effect is skin irritation and dryness.

Sulfur
It is an ingredient that can be found in many over-the-counter product usually in combine with other ingredient such as alcohol, resorcinol, salicylic acid. Due to the unpleasant odor of sulfur is not usually . Despite the long use of sulfur, the exact principle on how sulfur work is not knows. The common side effects are chapped skin , peeling on the applied area.

Resorcinol

It is a popular acne treatment ingredient commonly combine with sulfur. It work by shedding dead skin cell and breakdown comedones. The common side effects are skin redness, excessive dryness or skin irritation.

Prescription topical treatment

Azelaic acid
Is an acne treatment ingredient available by prescription. Use to treat mild to moderate acne. It works by combat the P.acne bacteria, regulate the shedding of dead skin cell, help relieve inflammation. It is believe to be well tolerate more than Benzoyl peroxide and can also be used as an alternative for benzoyl peroxide. In addition it is also proved effective in treating dark spot. In usually available in from of cream or emulsion. The common side effect are skin dryness and lighten of the skin in applied area.

Topical antibiotics- clindamycin, erythromycin , sulfacetamide
All of them available by prescription. They are used to treat moderate to severe acne especially the inflame one. They work by reducing the number of acne causing bacteria P.acne. Due to antibiotic effect it directly help reduce the inflammation of acne. A combination of erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide is also effective on treatment of acne and help reduce the rate of bacterial resistance to antibiotics use. . Like most of topical acne treatment the common side effect are skin dryness and irritation. "...It is important to use as directed to decrease bacterial resistance that can occur with antibiotic use." ("prescription Medications for Treating Acne" [n.d.]) .

Topical retinoid - adapalene, tazarotene , tretinoin
They are basic and widely use acne treatment ingredient for moderate to severe acne. Topical tretinoin is derivative of vitamin A. It work by unclog the pore to prevent comedones for forming. During the use it will increase photo-sensitivity of the skin. So it is recommended that to use sunscreen during the use of topical retinoid. Adapalene and tazarotene are synthetic form of retinoid which available in form of gel of cream. The later should not be use in pregnant women.
Tretinoin is natural from of retinoid but this form usually cause the skin irritation. The common side effect of retinoid are redness of skin, skin dryness and skin irritation.

Systematic acne treatment

Systematic acne treatments refer to any treatment that work internally. It may come in the form of oral antibiotic, Hormonal treatment , or oral isotretinoin. It is available through prescription only
and usually use in combine with topical treatment. It usually use to treat presintence acne condition or severe kind of acne like cystic acne.

Oral antibiotic - erythromycin, tetracycline , minocycline , doxycycline
Mainly use for persistence acne or severe kind of acne. It work by reducing the number of P.acne.
Due to antimicrobial activity it directly have anti-inflammatory effect. The dosage depend on each kind of antibiotic so we recommend you to see doctor and get exact dose of antibiotic. Same as any use of antibiotic the long-term use will lead to bacteria-resistance against certain antibiotic but you can use other kind of antibiotic to treat, when the later one are used. It is usually prescribed no longer than six month. The higher dosage is usually given during the beginning of the treatment. Then it will be lower when the severity of acne is subsided. The most common side effect of oral antibiotic is gastrological upset. Tetracycline should not be used with pregnant ,breast feeding women or children under 8 years old because it have an effect on development of skeleton. Use in pregnant women may cause defect skeleton in babies. It is highly recommend to get oral antibiotic from prescription only to prevent from dangers. In addition physicians will help you develop plan and amount of dosage that you need to be taken.

Contraceptive treatment
It is a kind of treatment that use to reduce the amount of androgen ( male hormone) which responsible for sebum production. It is used in women for most case and appear to work well.
It also use together with other kind of acne treatment such as Topical acne treatment. It can also be use as an long term treatment of acne. It is recommended that the women over 35 years old should consult gynecologist before any use of contraceptive pill. ("prescription Medications for Treating Acne" [n.d.])

Isotretinoin

It is one of the most powerful systematic treatment available. It is the vitamin A derivative. It use to treatment severe kind of acne or when other treatment are no longer effective. It work by reducing the production of oil in sebaceous gland from this reason it help reduce amount of comedones. While it is the one of most effective acne treatment , serious possible side effects it will only been used when other treatment are no longer work. One of the most common brand sold is Accutane (Palmer B, 2010 )

Procedural acne treatment

The term procedural refer to any treatment perform by Dermatologist, practitioners or estheticians as a supportive treatment in combination with other acne treatments ( Palmer A , 2010)

Comedone extraction
Usually perform by esthetician. It work by extracting the debris in the pore and other soft close comedone which in turn reduce number of acne formation.

Light Chemical Peel
It refer to the use of certain acid like AHA, BHA, or glycolic acid to deeply exfoliates the skin. Which in turn unclog the pore from impurity. It usually perform by both esthetician and dermatologist. In moderate or severe case dermatologist are needed to perform chemical peel.

Microdermabrasion
It is a kind of treatment that use super fine crystal to deeply exfoliates the dead skin cell which help clear pore from debris. It is best to use with non-inflamed acne like black and white head.

Photo therapy
Is refer to treatment that use laser or light to kill P. acne or shrinking the sebaceous gland. The effect that you will get depend on the kind of photo therapy that is used. It can treat all acne condition. The dermatologist will help you decide which treatment is best for you.

Corticosteroid Injection
Refer to injection of corticosteroid to the acne which in turn reduce the inflammatory and shorten the healing time. It mainly use in cystic acne to reduce inflammation and acne scarring.

Acne scar treatments

Well acne scar it not a wonderful experience at all and sometime scars are permanent. But don’t be afraid ,there are numbers acne scar treatments available for you to choose.

Soft tissue fillers
The scar will be fill in by certain filler like collagen or fat. Which make the scar less visible .But the result is temporally, the scar need to refill from time to time.

Dermabrasion

It refer to the process of using rotating wire brush to remove the top layer of the skin.
It use to treat more severe scar. In this process the surface scar will completely remove and deeper scar will be less visible. Skin color may change in people with darker skin.

Microdermabrasion
Not only this process can held shedding the dead skin cell. The removing of dead skin cell in this process. Also help fading surface scar. Eventhough this process may need to be repeat many time before you can see any noticeable result, the good point is there is no skin damage

Laser, light source and radio frequency treatment

For laser it work by destroy the outer skin layer ( epidermis) and heat up the inner skin layer, Thereby, stimulating the new formation of the skin. In contrast to laser treatment light source and radio frequency treatment will not destroy outer layer of the skin but rather heat the dermis and stimulate formation of new skin. But the last two method need to be repeat several times to see any noticeable result.
